How to find unsupported claims in lab reports
Audit claim support by asking what evidence, comparison, and design feature would have to be true for each sentence.
Mark high-certainty language
Words such as proves, causes, always, and confirms can signal a claim stronger than the design supports.
Require an evidence location
A supported claim should point to a result, figure, table, or calculation. Background sources cannot substitute for missing experimental evidence.
Check design boundaries
Controls, randomization, replication, measured range, and uncertainty shape what can be inferred.
Use calibrated alternatives
Describe what the data show and acknowledge plausible alternatives. This preserves authorship and scientific caution without ghostwriting a preferred story.
