SI units in lab reports
Treat each number and unit as a pair, and preserve the same quantity meaning through conversions and presentation changes.
Keep a space between value and symbol
SI style generally separates a numerical value from its unit symbol, including compound units. Symbols are mathematical entities, not abbreviations that take a period or plural form.
Capitalization changes meaning
Prefix and unit symbols are case-sensitive. For example, m and M represent different powers of ten, while L and l are permitted litre symbols with local style considerations.
Convert the value with the prefix
Changing mL to L requires changing the numeric value by the matching power of ten. A unit-only edit silently changes the quantity.
Audit every presentation surface
Check prose, column headings, axis labels, legends, captions, and calculation lines. The same quantity often crosses all of them.
