Figure and table references in lab reports
A figure or table should have one stable label, a useful caption, an in-text purpose, and values that agree with the report narrative.
Use stable numbering
Number figures and tables independently in the order required by your course. Renumbering late in drafting can leave stale callouts.
Reference before interpretation
Introduce the item by label and explain why the reader should inspect it. Avoid orphan visuals that are never discussed.
Make captions self-locating
Include the measured relationship, conditions, units, sample size, and variability definition needed to understand the visual.
Cross-check data and prose
Verify that maxima, trends, labels, and statistics described in text are visible in the cited item.
