Run the crosswalk before and after reference formatting. First verify source identity and claim placement from actual documents. Then apply the required style and inspect the exported report for reordered numbering, broken hyperlinks, duplicate entries, missing special characters, and uncited list items. Corrections must preserve the student's authorship and must never invent a missing source.

Mismatched-year example

A method paragraph attributes a published assay to Lee et al. (2022), but the reference list says 2021 and the DOI points to a different article. The crosswalk preserves the claim and both identifiers, flags the mismatch, and sends it back to the student and course source instead of guessing which value is correct.

Verify source identity before style

Start with source identity rather than punctuation. For each in-text citation, record the author or organization, year or date, title, publication or publisher, DOI or stable URL, and the exact claim or method it supports. Open the real source when possible and check that the identifier resolves to the cited work. A plausible title or matching author name is not enough when the year or DOI points elsewhere.

Citation consistency has several layers. Source identity asks whether the cited work is the real work. Placement asks whether the citation is attached to the claim it supports. Coverage asks whether claims needing external evidence have it. Formatting asks whether the chosen style is followed. A report can be perfectly formatted yet cite the wrong article, and a correct article can still be placed beside a claim it does not support.

Trace claims, citations, and list entries both ways

Trace both directions. Every external claim that requires support should point to an in-text citation, and every in-text citation should point to exactly one reference-list entry. Every listed entry should be cited where the course expects it. Keep primary experimental evidence, course handouts, instrument documentation, datasets, and external literature distinguishable because they serve different roles in a report.

Apply the assigned style and inspect the final file

Apply formatting after identity and placement agree. Use the course or discipline's required style for ordering, capitalization, italics, author lists, dates, titles, containers, identifiers, and access information. If no style is specified, ask rather than combining conventions. Recheck the final exported document because reference managers, group editing, or PDF conversion can reintroduce duplicate entries, broken links, missing characters, and numbering drift.

Scientific and authorship limits

Consistency does not prove scientific correctness, and observations or results must never be invented or changed.
