A lab-report introduction format should give each paragraph one job: establish only the scientific context needed for the experiment, explain the tested relationship with sources, then state the specific question or objective, variables, and any hypothesis required by the course. The introduction is a narrowing argument, not a full literature review.

Introduction planning fields

Use the paragraph map to plan the logic before drafting prose. Each row states a job the paragraph must perform and the evidence needed to perform it.

Write a one-sentence purpose beside each planned paragraph. Then list the external claims that need sources and the experiment terms that must match the method. Delete background that does not help the reader understand the question, variables, or rationale for the performed work.

Paragraph one establishes the relevant mechanism, paragraph two explains and sources the relationship being tested, and the final paragraph states the objective, variables, and hypothesis if required. The wording is checked against the method actually used.

Choose only relevant background and sources

Outline the introduction as a narrowing argument. Include only the concepts and prior evidence needed to understand the specific experiment, define important terms, and use sources for external scientific claims. End by stating the objective or question and any required hypothesis or expected relationship in wording consistent with the performed method.

Audit each background sentence with two questions: does the reader need this to understand the experiment, and does the sentence make an external claim that needs a source? Then audit the final paragraph against the performed method. The question, objective, variables, materials, and conditions should use the same terms that appear later in the report.

Keep variables consistent with the performed method

Do not let an example determine the student's experiment, result, or conclusion. A polished literature paragraph is not useful if it does not establish the variables or rationale for the current work. Follow the required citation style and separate established background from the student's prediction and later findings.

Recheck the introduction after results are final

After drafting the full report, compare the introduction with methods, results, discussion, and conclusion. Check that variable names, conditions, organism or material labels, and objective remain consistent.
