Lab Report Data Table: Labels, Units, Precision, and Traceability

Select one principal value and trace it through the raw record, calculation, table cell, uncertainty or precision rule, and results sentence. Repeat for every claim-bearing row or column. If a mismatch appears, resolve it from the original evidence rather than choosing whichever version makes the narrative easier.

Response-time table worked example
Table 2 compares mean response time by tested condition. Column headings carry units, sample count and uncertainty are defined in a note, excluded trials point to a recorded reason, and the results paragraph names the pattern without repeating every cell or interpreting causes reserved for discussion.
Make labels, units, and precision consistent
Choose a table only when exact values, repeated observations, or comparisons are clearer in rows and columns than in prose or a figure. Define the communication purpose first, then select the variables and summaries needed for that purpose. Do not paste an entire spreadsheet, duplicate the same values in a graph, or remove an inconvenient result merely to create a cleaner pattern.
A table should reduce cognitive work, not reproduce a spreadsheet. Preserve transformations and exclusions
Give the table a stable number and specific title. Put units in headings, retain sample or condition identities, apply a justified precision rule, align comparable values, and use notes for abbreviations, uncertainty, transformations, exclusions, and statistical summaries. Keep raw and derived values distinguishable and preserve the calculation or record behind each summarized cell.
Trace every summarized value to evidence
Call out the table in results text and describe the relevant pattern without repeating every value or importing causal interpretation reserved for discussion. Then cross-check names, units, precision, counts, signs, and values against figures, prose, abstract, and conclusion.
